Spring 2014
President’s Ponderings Spring 2014
Given the heaps of snow and the continuing cold, one might query the title to my remarks. Yet hope springs eternal and by the time of our next meeting on March 18 matters should have improved in that regard. John McKenty’s presentation on the CCM company will be well worth hearing at that time. Surely many of you must have owned a CCM bike or skates at some time in your younger days. On the following April 15 Jeff Minogue will speak on the $300 million land claims settlement for the Coldwater Reserve, another fascinating story. Both meetings will be at Barrie City Hall at 7:30 pm. And finally the AGM dinner on April 29 with Earle Gray, a noted author on little known aspects of Canadian history, will wind up our season. The dinner, held at Midhurst United Church at 5:30 pm, will be a joint meeting with the Simcoe County Historical Association so members are encouraged to obtain your tickets as soon as possible as seating may be limited. Tickets will be available at the next two meetings at City Hall for $25 each. This will also be the time to renew memberships for next year, so we hope everyone will renew their memberships and try to recruit a friend or two or encourage former members to rejoin us. Our membership has declined to a total of 35 and it will be difficult to continue unless we can increase this number in the future.
The restoration of the portrait of Sir James Gowan, the first judge of Simcoe County, that was delayed so long is now finally underway. This has been a major project for the BHA, along with the substantial support of Simcoe County, the SCHA, the Simcoe County Law Association and various members of the judicial community. The Barrie Examiner printed an excellent front-page photograph and article by Ian McInroy which is reprinted in this newsletter. Speaking personally, it was a real chore for Gary Owen and myself to retrieve this very large and heavy portrait from the Courthouse on a cold and wintry day. Once in his shop, and viewed closely, however, obscure details could be seen that will all come to light when it is fully restored and the frame is refurbished. It promises to be a magnificent piece!
Finally, we have begun work on our program for next year. We hope to build on the successes of this year in bringing further excellent speakers and presentations for your enjoyment.

Tues. March 18, 2014 - 7:30 p.m. - CITY HALL - History of the C.C.M. company
John McKenty’s account of the history of the C.C.M. company that once dominated the market in bicycles and skates and then disappeared. John comes with the book he has published and a trunk full of artifacts. In the old 6 team NHL everybody wore C.C.M. skates except one player. Who was it?

Tues. April 15 - 7:30 p.m. - CITY HALL - Coldwater Reserve land claims
Jeff Minogue will speak to us on the Coldwater Reserve land claims and the $300 million settlement that was finally achieved after years of arduous research and negotiations. I have heard Jeff’s presentation and it is a story that is eye-opening and should be told and retold many times.
