Captain Mehdi Imtiaz is a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal recipient. Peter Van Loan, MP, nominated Captain Imtiaz due to his 33 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces, including tours in Sudan and Afghanistan and actively promoting the importance of service by recounting his experiences to many community groups, including school groups.
GOWAN PORTRAIT RESTORATION UPDATE
Sir James Robert Gowan (1815-1909) was the first judge of Simcoe County and later a member of the Canadian Senate. His portrait is currently hanging in the Barrie Courthouse. The Barrie Historical Association has identified its restoration as one of its projects. The estimated cost exceeds $9,300.
The BHA has committed $1,400 towards the restoration and has raised, to date, an additional $2,600 from the Simcoe County Law Association and the Simcoe County Historical Association. A grant application for 2013 funding from the County of Simcoe (owner of the portrait) has been submitted and letters have been sent to others to seek further financial support for this project.
