SEPTEMBER 26 MEMBERS’ MEETING: 7:30 P.M. IN THE SIR ROBERT BARRIE ROOM
(2ND FLOOR, CITY HALL – stair and elevator access available from the Rotunda)
This year the executives of the Barrie Historical Association and the Simcoe County Historical Association have decided on closer cooperation for several reasons. We will have more joint meetings so that we can improve attendance and share the costs of speakers. This will allow us to draw on speakers who may have to travel some distance and will have added travel costs.
A shared speaker list also means less work in finding engaging and interesting speakers which is a time consuming task. For both associations it is becoming increasingly difficult to find members willing to serve, even for a short time, in an executive position. For example, the BHA is now without someone to take charge of memberships and we are desperately in need of a secretary. Several
more members are also needed as directors so that we at least have a quorum for our executive meetings. With our membership slowly declining we need to recruit new members or at least encourage former members to rejoin us The bottom line is that if you wish the association to continue we need your help.
BRAD RUDACHYK holds a PhD from Queen’s University and teaches at the University Partnership Centre at
Georgian College. He has a strong interest in our local history and is a co-author of the recent publication Beautiful Barrie. He is a former president of the Simcoe County Historical Association and is currently the president of the Ontario Historical Society. In 2001 Brad published Streetwise in Barrie: An Historical Guide to Barrie Street names, which contains
everything you would want to know about how our city took the shape that it did.
Brad will focus his presentation on the early historic street names and their connection to the war of 1812, but I am sure he can come up with answers for any questions on what is an interesting and varied topic.
This book is available at the Barrie Public Library - http://barrie.bibliocommons.com/item/show/216754045_streetwise_in_barrie
The Executive hope to see all of our members on Thursday Sept 26 for what promises to be an enjoyable evening.

Presentation by Aaron Kontkanen, the Andrew Hunter prize winner, on E.C. Drury
The Andrew Hunter prize of $750 is given annually to a university graduating student. This year the recipient is Aaron Kontkanen who will give a presentation on E.C. Drury, a former premier of Ontario and a native of Crown Hill. Drury, of course, left us a living legacy in the creation of the Simcoe County forests established during and after his time in office. We normally do not have a meeting in October so this will be an extra meeting when we join with the members of the SCHA. See their website at - http://www.wp.simcoecountyhistory.ca/

Tues. November 19 - 7:30 p.m. - Barrie Legion Hall - (St. Vincent Street and Cundles Road) - MAP & Directions
In November the BHA and the SCHA will join forces with the Barrie Legion to hear Ted Barris, a well-known author, who will give us the real story on “The Great Escape.” His account and extensive research shows that this mass breakout of Canadian and British prisoners of war, during World War II, is a far more fascinating tale than anything portrayed by Steve McQueen and Hollywood. You don’t want to miss this one!
