March 2013
THURSDAY, MARCH 14 JOINT MEETING WITH SIMCOE COUNTY
HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION:
Barrie City Hall, Huronia Rooms A & B, 7:30 p.m.
Each year, the Barrie Historical Association and the SCHA have a joint meeting and this year it is our turn to host. The guest speaker is John Bacher, a founding member of the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society, concerned
with stopping urban sprawl in Ontario and is currently employed by them as a researcher.
This work has caused him to be involved in a variety of local issues of concern to residents of Simcoe County, notably the defeated mega quarry and Dump Site 41 and the proposed closure of Springwater Provincial Park.
An historian who received his doctorate from McMaster University in 1985, John is the author of “Two Billion Trees and Counting: The Legacy of Edmund Zavitz”. The book was authored so that more people will understand the fragility of
southern Ontario’s ecosystems and the heroic work that has rescued them from degradation in the past.
Remember to bring your completed Questionnaire to hand in at this meeting if you haven’t already done so (blank copies will be available at the meeting).

We are (still) looking for members interested in working on the 2013/14 Board. There is a need for someone for the Board Secretary as well as others to work on the suggestions from the recent Member Questionnaire results, membership recruitment, etc. Please contact
a member of the Board at your earliest convenience if you are interested and/or require additional information so there is a slate of nominees for the election at the AGM.

DINNER AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Mark your calendars for this grand finale to another successful year for BHA: Thursday, May 9 at the Sheba Shrine
Centre (142 John St, Barrie) – dinner at 6:00 p.m.
An exciting evening is planned for you that will include:
_A great buffet dinner provided by Jean’s Catering
_Our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
_ An excellent and entertaining speaker – Ken Weber, a retired professor from the University of Toronto, will present “The Naughty
Nineties (1890s) – A First Stab at Women’s Lib”. The 1890s saw the launch of the “New Woman Era” and the world changed forever.
Learn about the role played by Canadian women in this movement which had a lasting, world-wide impact far beyond what might have been expected from a thinly-populated country barely three decades old.
_Silent Auction2 and door prizes
Tickets for this evening are $35 per person and will be available for purchase at our March 14 meeting or by sending a cheque to Jim Willis at Barrie Historical Association, P.O. Box 316, Barrie, L4M 4T5 NO LATER THAN APRIL 26 (to provide number of attendees to caterer).
1) We will take a vote for a) the preferred entrée at the Mar 14 meeting (roast beef, roast turkey, boneless chicken breast, baked ham with pineapple, or roast stuffed loin of pork) and b) whether we should have the bar open (added cost)
2) Do you have something for the Silent Auction (it doesn’t have to be “historical”) or do you know of a business that would donate something (e.g. a gift certificate)?
If so, please let Sharyn know what can be provided ([email protected] as well as a minimum bid amount so a list of items can be compiled.
